Proteas happy with the 'workout'
South Africa's batsmen gained some valuable time in the middle and their bowlers enjoyed another useful work-out, as the tour match against Somerset ended in a draw yesterday. Neil McKenzie will have slept much better last night after clearing the ghosts of his first-innings, first ball duck with a composed 63, while the spinner, Paul Harris popped up to score an unbeaten 50. The bowlers were looking settled, and all said, it was a very useful 3 days. "I think we got everything we wanted out of the game," said South Africa's coach, Mickey Arthur. "In fact I don't think we could have scripted it better."
On paper then, it looks very rosy. But throw in the pressure cooker atmosphere of Lords, a very vocal home crowd, some 'big match nerves' and a few bad or unlucky umpiring calls against you, and the best laid plans can go down in flames. That's just what makes cricket...cricket.
