Yes, I have Been Sleeping Under a Rock....

I'm back!

It's been five days since I've watched sport, read about sport or even played sport so I'm a bit vague on what's transpired over the past few days. All I'm relying on now is other journos' takes on the weekend's matches, but I have had some time to ingest the info and form my own opinions.

The Springboks kicked off their end-of-year tour to the UK in winning fashion, beating the Welsh 20 - 15 at the Millennium stadium in Cardiff. Now, many pundits and columnists have slammed the Boks for letting a 20 - 3 lead slip through their fingers in the final quarter but I say good on them for taking their foot off the gas a bit. The game was already won and there was no point in playing all out, risking injury in the first match on tour. This team still has to play two tough tests and we'd rather the team win them all with close margins than have one big win and two losses.

My beloved Manchester United played a very y! outhful looking Arsenal team in the English Premier League at the weekend and were thoroughly outplayed. It hurt watching the defending English and European champions get beaten 2 - 1 by a side who's average age is 18. Arsene Wenger's selections show he didn't plan on winning game and that the purpose of this match was to blood his youngsters, but what a pleasant surprise that must've been for old Wenger.

On the domestic front, Ajax Cape Town were given a hammering of note when they went down 4 - 0 to Golden Arrows last night. It was probably sweet revenge for Arrows who were eliminated from the Telkom Knockout by the Urban Warriors on Sunday night.

Hashim Amla continues to impress for the Proteas in the One-day Internationals and is a serious contender to take Herschelle Gibbs' place at the top of the order when South Africa head down-under for their series against Australia. Amla stood head and shoulders above everyone else in the batting stats, s! coring 175 runs in two innings at an average of 87.50. To put ! things i n perspective, he scored 76 more runs than Jacques Kallis who was the second highest run scorer in the short series. Sure it's against Bangladesh, put a performance like that can't just be overlooked.
